Is Claude Free? Yes, and Here Are the Free Plan Limits
6 min read ·
Is Claude free? Yes: Anthropic offers a $0 Claude plan at claude.ai with no credit card required, and as of July 2026 it includes chat on web, desktop, and mobile, web search, memory, file creation, code execution, and remote MCP connectors, with usage capped inside a rolling 5-hour window. What the free plan does not include is Claude Code, higher usage capacity, and the paid-only features that come with Pro ($20 per month) and Max ($100 to $200 per month). This guide covers exactly what free gets you, how the limits work, and how to stretch them, verified against Anthropic's official pricing page and help center on July 5, 2026.
What the Claude Free Plan Includes
Claude's free plan includes chat on every platform Anthropic supports plus a feature set that was paid-only a year ago: code generation, data visualization, content creation, web search, memory, file creation, code execution, desktop extensions, Slack and Google Workspace connections, remote MCP connectors, and extended thinking, per claude.com/pricing as of July 2026. You sign up with an email address; no credit card is required.
That makes free Claude one of the most capable $0 AI assistants available: it can search the web for current information, run code to analyze data you upload, generate downloadable files, and remember context across conversations. Free Plan Limits: How They Work
Free Claude usage is capped inside a rolling 5-hour window, not a daily quota: your allowance replenishes continuously as older messages age out of the window rather than resetting at midnight. Anthropic's usage limits article explains that capacity depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, which model you are chatting with, and the effort level selected, which is why Anthropic publishes no fixed message count for the free tier.
In practice, short text-only exchanges stretch furthest, while long conversations, big file uploads, and extended thinking consume the allowance fastest. When you hit the cap, Claude shows an estimated reset time and you can either wait or upgrade; our guide to the "you've hit your limit" message covers exactly what triggers it.
Free vs Pro vs Max
The paid plans buy capacity and paid-only surfaces rather than a different assistant: Pro costs $20 per month (or $17 per month billed annually) with at least 5x the per-session usage of free, and Max costs $100 or $200 per month with 5x or 20x the usage of Pro.
| Feature | Free ($0) | Pro ($20/mo) | Max ($100-$200/mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat, web search, memory, file creation | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Code execution and MCP connectors | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Usage allowance | Base | At least 5x free per session | 5x or 20x Pro |
| Claude Code (terminal agent) | No | Yes | Yes |
| Unlimited projects and Research | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cowork, Design, Science | No | Yes | Yes |
| Priority at peak traffic | No | Yes | Yes, highest |
Is Claude Code Free Too?
No: Claude Code, Anthropic's terminal coding agent, is not part of the free plan and requires Pro, Max, a Team premium seat, or pay-as-you-go API billing. If the coding agent is what you are after, our dedicated is Claude Code free guide breaks down every path, including genuinely free alternatives that pair open-source agents with free models.
How to Get the Most From Free Claude
The free allowance is token-based under the hood, so the way to stretch it is to make each message cheaper. Five tactics that work:
- Start new chats per topic. Claude re-reads the whole conversation on every message, so a 50-message thread costs many times more per reply than a fresh one.
- Trim attachments. Paste the relevant excerpt instead of uploading a full PDF; large files are the fastest way to burn a window.
- Front-load your prompt. One well-specified message beats five clarifying rounds, both for quality and for quota.
- Save heavy features for when they matter. Web search, extended thinking, and code execution all cost more than plain chat.
- Time your sessions. The rolling 5-hour window means a morning session and an evening session draw from effectively separate allowances.
Limitations of the Free Plan
The free plan's real constraints are capacity and the developer surface, not intelligence. You will feel them if: you work in long documents or big codebases (context-heavy work exhausts the window quickly); you need Claude Code, which free never includes; you need projects and Research for organized long-running work; or you need reliability at peak hours, when free users are deprioritized behind paid ones. Also note that "free Claude" means the consumer apps: the Claude API has no free tier and bills per token, so anything programmatic needs a funded Claude API key.
