Hermes / OpenClaw Agent Cost Calculator
Estimate the real monthly cost of running AI agents. Pick a model or plan, a usage level, and a number of agents to compare per-token API billing, flat subscriptions, and self-hosted models on a VPS — and find the cheapest way to run agents 24/7.

Cheapest way to run agents 24/7
For interactive, single-person work a flat subscription ($20–$200) is usually simplest. But the moment you want agents running unattended 24/7, per-token API bills climb fast and the cheapest durable option is a self-hosted model on a VPS you control — from $8.79/mo for API-mode agents, or Hostinger KVM4 (~$14/mo) to host a local model.

How this agent cost calculator works
There are three completely different ways to pay for the model behind an agent, and they scale in opposite directions. Per-token API pricing (Claude, GPT, OpenRouter) bills every token in and out, so cost grows with usage and never hits a ceiling. A flat subscription (ChatGPT Plus or Pro, Claude Pro or Max) is a fixed $20 to $200 a month, but it covers one person's interactive use and does not cover programmatic API traffic. A self-hosted open model on a VPS makes the tokens free and charges you only for the server.
The calculator multiplies a monthly token estimate for your chosen usage level by the number of agents and the model's per-token rate. As of July 2026 that is $5 input / $25 output per million tokens for Claude Opus 4.8, $3 / $15 for Claude Sonnet 5 (introductory $2 / $10 through August 31, 2026), $1 / $5 for Claude Haiku 4.5, $5 / $30 for GPT-5.5, and $0.63 / $5 for GPT-5.1. Our Claude API cost calculator goes deeper on token counts and prompt caching.
The gap is the point. An always-on agent on Opus 4.8 can cost thousands of dollars a month in raw tokens, while a subscription is flat and a self-hosted model on a Hostinger VPS runs from about $9 a month. That is why the recommendation funnels heavy, unattended workloads toward self-hosting. See the Hermes agent cost breakdown for worked real-world numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Why is always-on Opus so expensive?
An agent that loops continuously resends its context on every step, so a single always-on agent can push hundreds of millions of tokens a month. At $5 input and $25 output per million, that is thousands of dollars per agent before you add a second one. Prompt caching helps, but the trend line still climbs with usage.
Can I just use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription?
For your own interactive chatting and coding, yes. But subscriptions do not include API tokens, and API keys do not include a subscription. Programmatic agents that run unattended have to use the API or a self-hosted model, so a flat $20 to $200 plan cannot power a fleet running around the clock.
What is the cheapest way to run agents 24/7?
A self-hosted open model on a VPS you control. The model tokens are free, so you pay only for the server — from $8.79 a month for API-mode agents, or a KVM 4 class box (around $14 a month) to host a local model. Not sure which plan? Use the VPS plan picker.
Are these prices accurate?
They match each provider's published per-token and subscription pricing as of July 2026. Real bills vary with actual token counts, caching, batch discounts, and promotions, so treat the output as a planning estimate and confirm current rates before committing to a budget.
